CoolDown – Optimization of District Heating in Existing Buildings

The Cool Down project is focused on the optimization of piped heat supply in existing buildings and efficient integration of renewable heat sources into the networks through secondary measures. The overall coordination of the network and the scientific monitoring of implementation are fundamental parts oft he project.

Project goals

The overall objective of the CoolDown project is to collect and validate suitable measures for the rapid and practicable transformation of heating networks with a focus on the secondary side and (existing) buildings. The following sub-objectives are planned in the project as a basis for future investments:

  • Development of practical and coordinated guidelines for the rapid conversion of heating networks
  • Development of data-based identification of non-optimally functioning consumers (buildings) and the development of digital business models
  • Potential assessment with regard to energy, hygiene, economy, environment (CO2)
  • Laboratory testing of systems available on the market, verification of function and effectiveness
  • Preparation of training documents and measures for dissemination in the sectors

Project result

The project is divided into areas such as market analysis, methods and technologies for return temperature reduction, model calculations of typical buildings and grid feedback, laboratory tests of the technologies an operating concepts. A key aspect of the project is the dissemination of the project results in the participating sectors. Practical and coordinated handouts are being developed that offer solutions for the rapid conversion of heating networks with a focus on secondary measures. In addition, training documents will be produced to inform the trade about the new solutions and promote knowledge transfer.
