Urban and Architectural Acoustics

As the challenges facing us as a society in cities become increasingly complex, innovation alone is not enough; you need a strong innovation partner who can provide comprehensive support and a broad range of perspectives.

The Urban and Architectural Acoustics working group (UAA) is a unique mobilisation of resources to increase the pace of innovation in urban and architectural acoustic challenges. By gathering a number of research institutions and several test beds and demonstration environments under the umbrella of a single innovation partner, we create improved conditions for society’s sound, noise and acoustic challenge solvers.

We gather around challenges and organise ourselves accordingly. Together, specialists in disparate fields innovate and resolve tough problems. Depending on the nature of the challenge and our assignment, we take on a variety of roles in the innovation system, and develop new ones as and when required. We are owned by the Fraunhofer-Institute for Building Physics and work in collaboration with and on behalf of the private and public sectors and academia. Together, we develop services, products, technologies, processes, materials and designs that contribute to a sustainable future and a competitive European business community.

Auralisation & Acoustics VR

Auralisation and acoustic virtual reality are key technologies in the development of urban and architectural projects. This allows us to evaluate and optimise the impact of design decisions on the acoustic quality of a space. Furthermore, this technology enables the development of innovative solutions for acoustic challenges in urban environments.

Generative acoustics

Generative acoustics is an innovative field that utilises advanced technologies to create realistic acoustic simulations that accurately represent the sound of urban environments. This technology allows us to evaluate and optimise the impact of design decisions on the acoustic quality of a space.

Quiet urbanism

Tranquil urbanism is a design philosophy that aims to create urban spaces that are both functional and peaceful. By considering noise reduction, visual reduction and conscious design of open spaces, tranquil urbanism strives to make cities places of calm and well-being.

Silence and elegance

Silence Architecture utilises the subtle aspects of design to appeal to the senses and create an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity. This technology can also help to reduce the impact of noise in urban environments and create a calming atmosphere.

Soundscape architecture

Soundscape architecture is an emerging concept that enables the design of acoustic environments through the deliberate manipulation and shaping of sound. It combines elements of acoustics, psychology and architecture to create a harmonious sound environment. By designing the soundscape, urban spaces can be made more pleasant and inviting, improving the quality of life for residents.
