Heat pumps are a key answer to heating and air conditioning buildings in a future-oriented and carbon-neutral way. However, with increasing urbanization, they also pose challenges due to the noise generated by their fans and compressors. Especially in densely built-up areas, noise pollution often extends beyond a person’s own four walls and into the neighborhood.

Our Services

We work with you to analyze the design of your heat pump in order to identify avoidable noise sources and transmission paths.

Our test facilities allow us to examine all three types (indoor installation, outdoor installation, split units) of air/water heat pumps with an output of up to 20 kW. Possible topics for development projects include

Analyzing parts to determine their contribution to noise

• Investigating how parts interact
• Measuring sound pressure levels and determining sound power under any ambient conditions
• Measuring velocity distribution at heat exchanger level
• Analyzing and ranking transmission paths

Noise reduction measures

• Flow optimization, such as the inflow to the fan
• Designing and dimensioning sound-insulating and sound-absorbing ducts
• Developing sound-insulating enclosures

Psychoacoustic analyses and assessments

• Preparing and evaluating artificial head recordings for realistic assessments
• Test subject surveys on the disruptive effect and acoustic quality of heat pumps based on the recordings
• Literature and field studies on the impact and acceptance of heat pump acoustics
